How NOT to support an aquarium.

After FINWIN recent "dum dum" thread I thought this was quite appropriate as a stand alone example of the sheer lunacy of what people think is ok in the hobby.

This is from another fish keeping forum, one which I browse through more than anything, I'm not particularly active in it at all.

As soon as I read through the thread I thought I'd share it with you guys. I haven't linked the actual thread from the forum in question simply because imo it is extremely embarrassing for the poster.

This particular member had posted a picture of a wholly unsuitable aquarium stand for their, wait for it.....55g aquarium!! That is a chunk of weight right there, and for the past couple of months they've had their full tank perching on this thing, so far, and miraculously, without incident.

It is a flimsy, folding travel table. It's flimsiness is highlighted even further when you realise that this thing weighs just over 12lbs!!!!

The reason for their post was because they were apprehensive about the suitability of this table, and were looking for advice. Thankfully the advice they received was sound, as in, ARE YOU FECKING SERIOUS!

The mind boggles, it really is astonishing. God only knows how their thought process led them down the path that this thing was ok. Check it out.....

I'm not referring to the dum-dum in question...I'm talkin' to you, Esox! How can you honestly expect to tell us about this disaster-in-waiting without showing us the picture, or at least providing a link to it??? That is just plain cruel! You're worried about embarrassing the genius who did this, but that ship has sailed; he embarrassed himself already by posting it, and it's your solemn duty as a feckless internet surfer/lurker to perpetuate the folly by showing it around!

I don't wanna see a picture of a Walmart ad; I need a pic of a 55gal sitting on that card table, full of water and ready to rock! I am making popcorn and expect to see that when I get back!

Unfortunately the poster hasn't supplied actual pictures of their tank balancing, wobbling, shaking and creaking in their thread. It is in the "new to the hobby questions and answers" section, so maybe a newbie.....or a troll as Backfromthedead alluded to.

I sincerely hope it's the latter, because if this is a genuine newbie then they have the risk assessment qualities of a balloon and need to get out of the hobby fast! Lol.

Sounds almost like a cluck who posted on another website using an Ikea end table made of balsa/pine wood and assembled with SLATS. Said tank was a 50 tall teetering against the back wall. Pinhead wanted to know if they should spend money for a better stand, because they got the table for 12 bucks at the Ikea warehouse. Follow up a week later, tank crashed on floor, messed up flooring and fish in buckets. IDIOTS.

Oh, I forgot. There was a lamp next to the tank. It shorted out and fried the outlet. A LAMP. Think about it.

Well tbh i recently got a little folding table like that, metal legs and polyethylene top, and it is surprisingly sturdy. I feel like it would hold the weight but it would be a dangerous, precarious load just waiting for a chance to tip and flip if it was nudged hard enough.

Welp, let's do some math

Cost of new wood flooring and carpet
Cost of electrician for cooked outlet
Cost of replacement lamp
Cost of another tank

That 12 bucks spent on the table stand was a real bargain! Money, honey...

There is absolutely no doubt about it. This hobby is certainly not for people who are totally devoid of even the slightest bit of common sense. There is no wiggle room at all. Either you get it right, or the potential for serious s**t to happen is virtually guaranteed.

How I've got through unscathed so far only the big man upstairs knows, lol.
