I came across this article whilst browsing and thought it was worth posting. I do realise that some of this stuff is already in use, probably by some of you guys even.

Call me old school but i like to roll my sleeves up and get up close and personal with my tanks. Automated this, that and the other has no attraction for me whatsoever. Regular maintenance, testing and tinkering is what makes this hobby interesting for me, not some automated system to take all that away.

And just imagine for a minute if you're away on business, or on vacation, and an alarm on your phone goes off highlighting that something seriously wrong is going on in your fish room! An utter feeling of helplessness and despair would immediately wash over you.

No, not for me at all. How far would you guys take it?

I think it depends how big your collection is or the size of the tanks. Right now I just have two 75s and a pico reef, but when I had 10 tanks from 55-180, I think I would have appreciated automation.

For the average freshwater aquarist, I agree, probably not a thing.
But if you're a reef aquarist that has $10K invested in the corals and fish in a 50 gal system, with constant mineral dosing needs, that type monitoring is not out of the question, and those systems keep getting more and more popular.
I watch BRS tv videos regularly, just to keep up with emerging aquarium technology.
And I'm not able to keep up, I (like Lewis Black) have trouble just making a call on an iPhone.
or...
if your keep very pH sensitive fish like Altum and other wild angels, or Uaru fernndezyepizi, I can see how an on-line pH monitoring system, on an automated water change system could be a life saver .

A siphon, five gallon bucket, water conditioner, algae scraping tool, dependable heater & a significant weekly water change. Is anything else really needed to maintain a healthy home aquarium?
Oh yeah, a strong back, Lol.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Here's me questioning the usefulness of technology in the hobby......and yet some are still using buckets in 2023!!!! Lol.

If my tank can't run for 6 months without me doing anything other than topping off water, tossing some food in every couple of weeks, and maybe ripping out plants I have failed as a fishkeeper.
