I think something is wrong with my gar can someone help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cyprinids like pond raised feeder goldfish, and wild caught minnows and tetras, are notorious carriers of parasite such as Lernaea.
Even frogs and tadpoles can be carriers
Using any of the above as feeders (without a lengthy QT period) and thorough examination of each individual before putting it in a tank s a feeder, s a very risky proposition.

All it takes ia one carrier like the tetra above with 2 parasites on the lower jaw, and a couple on the dorsal, and the population of an entire tank can be wiped out in a week.
This is why I would never use feeder fish with my predatory fish.
I will starve a fish for a month or 2 in an attempt to convert it to pellets, before I'd subject a tank to using feeders.
Not saying it isnt a parasite, but couldn’t it be due to water quality as a more plausible explanation? OP said his gar had a decolourised nose, so I would lean more towards internal issues/ water quality.

hard to tell from the picture OP posted for sure however

Of course it could be a water quality issue, especially if the tank is newly set up, maybe even going thru a mini cycle but.....
There looks to be something hanging off the eye, and parasites can cause discoloration.
and the fish has been fed feeder fish.
Whether of not the thing in the eye is alive, cannot be determined with that far off, grainy, photo.
We need much more data. A close, water parameters including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate in ppm,,,and pH.

My gars used to get a weird white fungal looking coat either on their eye or scattered on their body when my pH got really low. It looks similar to what you are experiencing. Check your pH. If it is low, do a water change and add buffering rocks such as limestone or shells. Your problem should go away after that.

If your pH is not super low, I would start treating the fish for fungal infections. I use Jungle fungal treatment meds, and they seem to work good for me. Good luck.

what’s your water parameters? I suspect low pH but may be wrong. I’ll let others chime in kno4te kno4te duanes duanes
^^ what I suggested as well, faced the same problem as you and polypterus36. Fastest way to increase pH for what I did was add baking soda ( sodium bicarbonate). Works like a charm!

I think I'm going to buy some antifungle medicine dose anyone have any recommendations
