Red Alert from the DMV

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am never looking for them, so naturally it seems that they are in every second tank when I snoop through the LFS looking for something interesting. I've even considered getting some...but whenever I get a new species of cichlid, it seems like a year or so later I wonder why I bothered. :) I'm sure that if I woke up tomorrow with an overwhelming urge to have them...I couldn't find any. :)

But that won't happen.

HRP's...convicts...Africans...blah, blah, blah. Cichlids are cichlids. :)

So...what's the deal here? How did it go? Did you move The Horde to their new digs? Were the sales staff at the store as happy to see them as you expected?

...or did the store go dark as you approached?

Have there been another couple generations of new mouths to feed due to the delay? How are things on the home front?

I'm not very savvy on how to find and post cute pics off the internet, but this is the one that always leaps to mind when I read about your cichlid tanks

"...close that door!"

Or, maybe better: "...unplug that filter!" :)

Been really busy, but the lil goobers and jumbos are going to Petco Saturday. They just said 'no problem'. Besides the store manager said I could bring them whenever.

And yes, MORE babies. Brutus and Ace have a cloud of wigglers in the growout. But I'm not worried about these because their older siblings will thin them out. The ONLY predators that work are large babies vs wigglers. Adults WILL NOT EAT THE FRY. The siblings thinned out their own when papa Brutus and mama Xena had a batch. Brutus will be going into the 125 along with brother Blackbeard. These fish are super fast and elusive and when they get cornered will leap backwards in the air. You have to see it to believe it. Like popcorn in a pan!

I'll probably need 2 buckets. And a beer.

I have to admit, this is by far the funniest convo I've read on here for a while. xD. I'm sorry for your breeding pains, FINWIN...the idea about getting a sizeable hungry catfish would be pretty awesome. Who doesn't like a showstopping whopper of a catfish?

Well either these hrps are too good at survival or my predators suck...

1. The synos can't eat anything and get tattered/scratched up by the hrps or oscar
2. The parrots can't catch but will chase and fight
3. The Oscar tried for awhile but let's face it when you're 15 inches who gives a damn about chasing fast fish crackers?
4. The acaras had the best chance with mouth size /speed. Finally gave up but were perssistent for weeks, even tried ambush. A no go.
5. Severum couldn't ambush, not fast enough to change direction.

Sounds like you have defective predators, LOL I wouldn't think the synos would eat the fish, neither the parrots nor the acaras or the severum...The only true predator you have is the Oscar, which sounds defective. Maybe get a redtail catfish or a gulper. OOOOH a gulper would take care of those pesky cichlids. I promise you that, but you may want to remove any fish you don't want eaten...

This is funny because it's true! I think S SilverArowanaBoi must be the reincarnation of George Carlin...

The only one of those fish in your tank that could properly be considered a predator would indeed be your Oscar...or perhaps it would be more accurate to say he should be a predator...but he's not really an Oscar, is he? I mean...didn't you just post somewhere about him eating grasshoppers, but you had to break up crickets before he would eat them? That poor, misunderstood baby has you wrapped around his pelvic fin; he rolls those big bulbous eyes at you and you leap to service his every whim. Cutting up his food for him? Really???

You do get that he's a fish, right? :lol3:

I'll say it right now: I love Oscars. They get no respect simply because they are commonly available and seen all the time, but they are one of the coolest, smartest, most personable and most beautiful fish species we keep. They're the dogs of the fish world...and I love dogs!...but Brick is like a poodle in a dog show. You know, the big silly dog with his hair carefully coiffed and cut, a little ribbon tied in a bow on his head, a cute little jeweled collar, reclining on a luxurious quilted dog bed while his owner feeds him little goose-liver dog treats imported from France.

Brick would last about three hours if he ever had to fend for himself. He's most assuredly not a predator. Who would cut up his crickets for him?
