Is my Leopard Bushfish Sick?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wait a second, my Oscar is only a baby. It's around 4-5 inches. I don't think it is even a year old yet. Can it have HITH now? I keep my water pristine and tank clean, especially right now with the rampant sickness. My bushfish had the disease first and then it spread to the Oscar and Striped Raph. The Syno, Pictus and BGK are surprisingly immune to it as they haven't gotten sick yet (even though they have been hanging around close quarters with the sick fish).

Most oscars do not show HITH as juvies, or even in the first year, most not until at least the end of the 2nd year depending how off, the conditions like pH, elevated nitrate, hardness , overcrowding, or too small a tank are.
I have seen many posts , by people saying "my oscar has done great, and its been 4 months".
To me anything a couple years or under, I do not consider, valid experierience.

And certain fish are more prone to disease., than others, and more adaptable to adverse conditions, because of the conditions they experience in nature, choosing wisely is very important to a tanks overall success..

Those species not that far removed from pristine waters in the wild, placed in opposite conditions they have evolved to live in, should not be expected to thrive.

I collect fish from pristine, very aerobic rivers in Panama, where an 8.2 pH is stable within a couple tenths, and nitrate is undetectable.

Expecting these panamanian species to thrive under most most commonly accepted generic aquarium conditions, to me would be unrealistic.
So I maintain conditions in my tanks, that replicate the condition they experience in nature., as much as possible.
Below is my average parameter test, and flow.

Yes, it is true, I'm not experienced with Oscars, but I want him to improve. I'm not going to send him to the fish store without him being healed. So, how do I heal all the fish in my tank? Salt? More of the same meds I've been using?

Ok, my fish are not getting better, and the meds aren't working. As a matter of fact, I think the disease/diseases are getting worse. I haven't tried salt yet. I've hesitated to use it because I don't want to turn my tank saltwater and kill everything. Despite my fears, I want to get this sickness under control if it can be controlled, so how much salt can I put in a 55-gallon tank, and can I double the punch by putting in the meds and the salt simultaneously? Also, would doing more water changes work? I've been doing them twice a week.

Finally, I've done some research on what my fish could have, and I think it might be a mixture of things. Just like us humans can get multiple diseases at once (like how I had Covid and Strep throat at the same time *shudders*), I think my fish may have two diseases, possibly ick and a fungus. If this is the case, should I do any of the meds I mentioned above or try a completely different medicine?

If none of these treatments work, should I put down the sick fish? I don't want to do that if I can help it, but I'm tired of watching my fish suffer. How do I do that successfully and painlessly? I've heard of an oil that does the trick, but I forgot the name. Clove oil or something?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just fed up with this rampant sickness, and I want to move forward.

What kind of filtration are you running? What is the temp of the water?

I'm running two HOB Fluval filters, and the water temp is set to around 80 degrees (I say that, but the water is probably closer to like 78 or less as the heater isn't very even).

Okay. Well, most times people over react and over do it with meds. Maintaining good clean water in my experience is the best. Did you have carbon in your filters?

Um...not exactly sure about the carbon. I have three types of filtration in the filters, a sponge, a gray sand like packet (forgot what it was called lol) and these medium-sized tan pellets. Are any of these carbon? I don't know much about filtration specifics lol.
