k1 in bags vs free floating.

Is there a downside to keeping k1 in floating bags vs just a fluidize bed. Doing so will allow me to use a portion of my sump 4x2x1.5 as a second grow out. currently its all being used for solely k1. This is only half of the media other half is in the main tank as they both cycling as I work on some plumbing.

Down side bag will collect debris. The k1 will just be media in a floating bag.

Will the k1 work the same if there is sufficient flow? If so it will make way less noise since it wont be hitting against the side of the tank.

I think the way it’s designed to work is the banging around into each other promote the growth of strongest bacteria the film and dead bacteria gets knocked off.
Keeping it In a bag will still be a place for bacteria to grow just not a strong or efficient as free flowing.

Bacteria aren't fussy. They'll grow anywhere as long as there's sufficient food for them. K1 dancing around freely in that hypnotic motion, or bunched up together in a bag, floating, or weighted down, they're all fair game for bacteria.

I suppose you could bag it all up, weight it down, and position the bags to cover, partially or fully, the bottom of the sump.

There'd still be plenty of free space for fry/juvies then. But i bet they'd be a bugger to get out once you wanted to transfer them. They'd probably hide in the gaps in your bags of weighted down K1.
