Whenever I start cleaning the outer glass, my 1-foot Arowana freaks out and starts swimming crazily, hitting the glass. Can someone provide information about this issue? However, my Arowana is calm when I keep my hands in the water, but when I start to clean the exterior side, it starts acting so maniacally.

Try dimming the lights, adding dither fish, some large floating plants like hyacinth, or some tall vallisneria to help it feel more comfortable

In over 140,000,000 years of evolution there’s been nothing in that fish’s history to prepare it for a glass cleaning event. My suggestions:

- do not clean areas that don’t need to be cleaned
- wipe up slopped water immediately
- keep a microfiber cloth near the tank each time you open the lid

That fish will likely never calm down as what you’re doing appears to be a full on emergency from its view. The aspect to address is what changes could be made that might allow you to clean that glass less frequently.

i also have planters suspended from the top braces of my tank w/ bio balls as substrate and pothos stabbed into the bio balls. The idea was to suck up. Nitrogen but a bonus is that my Black Aro sees whatever he’s curious about and can choose not to see outside tank activity that might otherwise put him in flight mode.

And strap your lid down. Your fish will be dead within two years if you don’t.
