I have a tank with 6 bichirs in it ranging from 7-9 inches, they are the only things in my 135, I was looking into getting some kid of gar. I know most true gars probably won't fit. But ide like maybe a species that could look big enough to fill the upper part of the tank, what kind would work in a 135?

Honestly none ( Florida, Cuban, tropical, longnose, alligator, true spotted) would fit a 135g. What are the dimensions of your tank? Recommended length I would suggest would be 5-6 feet for ample swimming space. Although other members such as hao and biggerthebetter have mentioned 4ft is adequate enough as they do not swim much.

With Your tank dimensions you could possibly go for a Florida gar, although the width of the tank is quite narrow and may be cramped. It would grow 14-16” within the first year and slow down significantly. the following years of growth would only be 1-3” annually. The only worry I would have is with that small width, the chance of the gar breaking its back may be high, with true gar species having the reputation of bent back from damage.
