So I have been looking for a quarantine/ 3rd tank with a 4x4 footprint. I’m looking for something between 4x4x2 to 4x4x2.5. I didn’t know that those dimensions are near impossible but after scouring the globe I found one 15 minutes away from me but of course it’s rimless (4x4x2) So the question is is there anything I can do to keep stingrays, datnoids and Red tail cats in that tank? I know my arowanas gars are a no go. The best I can think of is lowering the water level 4 inches so they don’t slide over the top.

This is a picture of the tank in question. If I don’t go this route I will have to have one custom made which I would like avoid.

They make clips to drop/hold lids inside the rim. Rays are jumpers and will fly right out regardless of water height. Can easily make a canopy to raise the jumping level and hold lids also. No biggie IMO…

You could built an additional rim to put it on the top and either glue it there or make it heavy enough the fish cant move it.

In that rim you could also secure a proper cover if needed.

do you have a link to the clips or know what they are called?

quick example by searching “lid clip for rimless aquarium” on amazon. Not sure how wide they make them but there pretty common these days u should be able to find the thickness u need for whatever glass the tank has. 💀🤙

You could use the 4x4x2 as a sump and set up a 10x10x5 for a red tail cat. 😏

Oh, you said "red tail cats", better make that a 15x15x5.

I have 3 phantoms I am currently growing out 1 short body and 2 regulars. There is such a big difference between them even though they are the same age that. I am growing them out in different tanks. SB is my 3x3 others are in my sump. Then they will into the 4x4 and then go in my 500 gallon. Will probably end up keeping the short body. Until then will enjoy growing them out. RTC. are sedentary most of the times unlike my lince. In either case I’m sure they will be fine in the 500 for a while. Also I live 20 minutes from predatory fins and I’m sure they would love to do a “fish rescue” if too big

I’d just go the simple route, cut an egg crate light diffuser to size and put a brick on either end. That’s what I did with my 22” jardini
Easy peasy
BTW that’s awesome you found a tank that size
