New tall tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I’m either going to get one of Tarantula’s above or scrap it and get some species of African Rain Frog. Rain Frogs are quite unique, and I’d only see them during feeding once a week, but they’re super easy and super cute!
Seems like a waste of 31" of height, I'd stick with the tarantula

It's a footprint of 18.5 x 20 inches, so that's the main limiting factor. Any number of small community tetras, livebearers, rasboras, etc. should be suitable. The depth would make me avoid Corydoras or other small bottom-dwelling fish that need access to the surface for air; that's a bit of a trek for them, although in truth I suspect they do it all the time in the wild state.

I'd give it a lot of thought before turning this into any kind of terrarium. You will need to reach the bottom for cleaning purposes much more with any kind of non-aquatic habitat than with a typical aquarium set-up. Not only does that 30-inch depth make that a bit troublesome, but the length and width are so minimal that you will essentially be reaching down into a vertical tube to get to the bottom. If you have only ground-dwelling critters in there, then the height is totally wasted. If you keep arboreals, I can picture you reaching down and poop-scooping at the bottom, while tree-frogs and geckos are flying out the open top around your head.

How about that big-ass Day-Glo-blue spider? You know: the "taranantula." :) Is that arboreal? If so...make sure to have someone take videos of you with your face stuck into the top of the tank while you clean the bottom. I can already picture that spider eyeballing your Cali-surfer-dude mop top and getting ready to jump in; I'd bet that we could see about an inch of white all the way around each of your eyeballs...:)

I'm looking forward to seeing which way you decide to go on this; should be fun...at least for the rest of us...:)

I recently found this tank and stand on the side of the road for free. It is 18.5”L x20”Wx31”Tall, coming out to around 50 gallons. I am debating about doing fish or some other kind of creature, like an arboreal tarantula, tree frogs, the sorts.

If I did do fish I picture white sand with jungle val or other plants like that to go with the height. Im not sure what fish like tall tanks, though I assume community is always an option. I do know that angelfish like tall tanks, but idk if angelfish would fit in mine. So my question, what fish like tall tanks?
I have a 20 tall with jungle Val, frogbit and glowlight and harlequin rasbora for the top and peacock and empire gudgeons for the bottom and it’s actually a really cool little tank.

That tarantula seems cool. You could also try Crested Geckos, they’re also arboreal and enjoy tall tanks.

Or you could build something like this

that is quite cool! Problem is I do not have a lot of free time, and there is lots of maintenance involved in a paludarium :(. I was thinking of doing an ornamental beetle colony or stick insects because I do enjoy keeping insects.

I would try to build something like phreeflow posted only filled with water and do shrimp and snails, or a single crayfish, kind of a small footprint but they love climbing and exploring.

I was thinking either a colony of African Sun Beetles or a couple Jungle Nymphs. I am leaning more towards Jungle Nymphs due to their size and overall wow factor as well as the ease of keeping. All they need is a constant warm temperature and brambles to eat, which is easy because I have blackberries running rampant in the backyard.
