I began visiting Mexico and countries in Central America back in the late 80s, and because of my cichlid obsession, began testing water parameters there.
Every where I've tested the waters were hard, high pH and calcium rich.
Now living in Panama, I test every river where I collect fish, and even here (so close to S America (its only about 100 miles from Colombia)
all the waters I test are hard, high in pH (usually above 8), and mineral rich.


In the above API liquid tests, pH is red (8+) and nitrate yellow (undetectable) all from the local rivers I visit.
