Bigger filter than the FX6

So I have a 220gal native tank, with Bluegill, Crappie, Perch, and a couple plecos that I adopted because I’ve got the space for them. I feed live minnow and am currently filtering with a Fluval FX6, and it’s don’t the job for the most part, but I feel like I need an upgrade.. The fish are bigger than they were (obviously, I put them in as babies) and they’re producing more and more waste, also the fx6 is kind of a pain to clean. The one thing I really like about the FX6 tho is that I’ve got it set up so I do my water changes *through* the filter. I open the bottom valve and close the return valve and drain the tank that wayHas anyone used pond filters? I’m not ready to make the jump to a sump yet, I’m scared about cutting into my tank and I don’t have the money for a backup tank if anything goes wrong with this one.
Also yes I have a lot of Blackbeard algae, it’s there on purpose I’m using it as a living background so I’m not looking straight through to the wall behind the tank.

I’d build a dump filter - basically a sump on top of your tank that dumps back into your tank via gravity. You can use the fx6 as the water from the tank to the dump filter.

The Eheim 2262 has a backflush valve in the bottom of the canister as well.

+1 for just simply adding more fx6s

in the long term a sump would likely be the best means to filter most large-sized aquariums as they can hold more materials and substrates than most layered cans just from their inherent open-top, multistage system.

that being said there are some drawbacks to having sumps like water damage, for instance, I run 2 fx6s and a separate fx4 as backup in my 250g as the floor in which the tank is situated on is made of wood. As a result, if a power outage were to happen (which does often) the sump would likely overflow and leak.

Hagen Fluval cans are probably one of the most popular and reliable filtration systems money can buy quickly and without hassle.

that being said, if you are able to go for a sump without huge drawbacks or limiters like flooring, it is the best option IMO.
-better water flow
-better filtration
-increased space for substrates/polymers

This is my first post on the forum. Let me briefly introduce myself — my name is Robert, and I’m writing from Poland.

I'd like to share my simple setup for a trickle filter (I'm not sure if that's the exact term in English).
It consists of several boxes stacked vertically.
The top box contains aquarium filter floss, which serves as a mechanical filter. The main pump is placed directly in the aquarium and pumps water to the top box. From there, the water flows back down to the aquarium by gravity.

That’s it — a simple and effective solution.

Ahh, man alive! I want Crappie and Perch! And I LOVE filter talk... With larger tanks like your 220 it make perfect sense to use pond type ideas for filtration. A trash can filter can be any size you like and if you have some basic DIY skills as most hobbyists do, it could be a great addition to your existing method. I LOVE your tank! I'm gonna copy you! In my Chicago Plywood tank, 890 gallons of pure bliss...

I have heard decent things about those TEMU above the tank sumps

2262 is the beastliest of the all the canisters. won't fit under a standard stand though- need to place beside or behind.

I'm very interested in the Eheim 2262 but the $500 price tag is kinda of steep for the $125 price difference from the FX6 is it worth it?
