Sturisomatchthys panamensis

It must be a wild caught pleco never seen in the hobby, along with unknown characin in the second pic. There are plenty CA cichlid and live bearers in the hobby. But to the best of my knowledge, no characins or pleco from CA ever enter the aquarium trade. On the other hand, no live bearers from SA ever enter the aquarium trade despite their presence as far south as Argentina. I wonder why.

I don't know to which place you are referring to or where you got your information from, but these fish are or where all available in the aquarium trade since many years. I could just order captive breed S. panamensis now, if I wanted to.

Yup.. I have group purchased back in 2022 from a reputable vendor that have bred here repeatedly.. Growing them out has been a challenge, but I'm currently growing out a few of the offspring w/ the biggest prolly 4-4.5"...

S. Panamensis is not endemic to Panamá but found throughout Columbia and Ecuadors. Its native distribution is SA to the southern edge of CA. In comparison to hundred SA Pleco species kept in aquarium, S. Panamensis is just one tiny representation from CA. In comparison, there are nearly as many CA cichlid kept in aquarium as SA cichlid, aquarium live bearers came almost exclusively from CA, and Im not aware of any CA characins regularly available in the aquarium trade.
