75 gallon stocking ideas

So if I understand correctly these would be kept solo as the only cichlid in the tank? As in a centerpiece with something like livebearers, tetras, or some other dither?

Are these peacocks, haps, or mbunas? I like peacocks but they're just so damn expensive. $30+ for a show stopper centerpiece is one thing but a tank full is expensive.
They are definitely a more expensive option I would suggest growing them from juvenile and they are haps

Definitely African cichlids I would personally suggest a group of star sapphires their a beautiful cichlid and not to hard to care for
star sapphires are not going to fit happily in a 75, and malawis in general will likely not do well with tetras and livebearers. also this question was asked in the central and south american forum. i'm also not sure how most malawis would fare solo. I've seen it done but unless you're keeping the tank bare and forcing them to deal with your presence they're pretty skittish.

if you want to go the "only cichlid in the tank" route with dithers scrap the septemfasciata. they will eat smaller fish. australoheros, andinoacara, and cichlasoma i would say "with caution". everything else is fine solo and gets to a decent size that would fill out a 75 while still having a sufficient amount of room to be happy (~6"). buenos aires tetras make good dithers for all of these.

Ever think about a solo interactive wet pet?

Such as a cuban cichlid, parachromis multi aka "yellow jacket", lyonsi male, male beani, etc

I have, but I really like to have a variety of fish in a tank. I like Central American cichlids but I had no idea they would hybridize with each other even if they were of different genera. Plus I don't have a place for fry to go and the idea of them breeding and eating young in the tank seems a bit f-ed up to watch. Maybe my solution is a group of female apistos or a few solo males along with some other fish. Or bite the bullet and go with peacocks instead. Maybe New World cichlids aren't for me.

Got ya. You can do a group of 4-5 Amatitlania nanolutea with lots of rocks and wood and do a female Nicaraguan cichlid as a center piece. Or just the Amatitlania with swordtails. But more peaceful than there standard convict cousins.
Or even a group of 4-5 Herotilapia multispinosa aka rainbow cichlids with swordtails. Relatively peaceful and males get about 5 inches.
It's really limited what a 75 gallon can stock in terms of central american vs south american as most central american cichlids do better in shoals/groups.

Apistos can work definitely. I have 2 apistogramma macmasteri, 25 neon tetra, 10 cherry barbs and a few smaller green corydoras in a semi planted 75 gallon. Most peaceful tank I have.
