Clown loaches pricing question...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kept Modeatas with African Cichlids. The Mbuna had no trouble producing fry.

I'd go with a group of YoYo's if you can buy them at least 2 inches or longer. The YoYo's are very social and active. They also have an ever changing body pattern w/ nice coloration.

I can only speak for blue (modesta), clown (macracanta) and yo-yos. They should not be too bad for mouth breeders, but for egg scatterers and other, loaches in general not a good idea.
Bottom line, they will try to eat and play with everything in and around the tank, and will eat eggs and young. Mouth broodeing cichlids may have some protection. I love loaches but not for breeding other fish.

Appreciate the feedback guys. Definitely wanna deal with the MTS as a priority over breeding at this time.
One last question, is it ok to mix loach species? CL’s are available locally atm, but I do like the look of both yo-yo’s and modesta 🤔

I think you will like keeping a group of Modestas. They are the linebackers of the loach species. I've kept this group of Modestas for many years.

Btw, Modestas are unbelievably great scavengers. No worries about overfeeding. Lol.

My only advice is is be careful when choosing modesta. Make sure you are happy they look like modesta. That’s how I ended up with six eos. The guy had them listed as yellow tail modesta and they were hiding. As soon as I saw them I knew they were not modesta but eos. Slightly higher back more stocky at a young age and tail was almost clear when young. Eos are more argumentative than modesta and hide 20 times more than most loaches.
Still great fish if you’re not overly concerned about seeing them!
