Hi I am looking for some advice. I am setting up my new 240l tank and am considering a Tanganyika tank . The tank set up I believe I have all I need . My plan for the tanganyika would be one species of shell dweller a variety of rock dweller and one open water species . SD would be either Brevis or Similis, 1 male 2-4 females. Open water would be Leptosoma 8-10. The advice that old be useful is the rock dewellers what variety of species and in what male to female ratio. I keep reading conflicting advice. So any help would be appreciated. it seems the fish are hard to get

G'day Mark. Welcome to MFK mate.

I realize your asking specifically about a rock dwelling species but your proposed stocking is quite heavy. 240L is approx 60 US gallons.

Similis will rear young in multigenerational colonies and will fill your tanks lower water column very quickly creating territorial disputes with any other rock/shell dwelling species.

What can you tell about the tank dimensions?
What are your goals? Display or breeding?

If you want to create a harmonious multi-species display having each species as a pair or breeding group is going to be problematic in a tank that size 🤷🏻‍♂️

The tank is on the smaller side for 3 species. But it's doable under certain criteria.

- Most Cyprichromis need a lot of space. That's why I highly advised against any species except true leptosoma. No leptosoma jumbo, Speckback, yellow head etc!

- For a colony forming shell dweller everything above the shells becomes a total no go area = no space for Cyprichromis.
That's why I would go with a pair of brevis or any other pair building shell dweller (all of them except multifasciatus, similis and callipterus form pairs) an place only a 2-3 shells in the corners of the tank. That will keep enough space free for the C. leptosoma.
I would also avoid too dominant species like the Lepidiolamprologus

- for the cave dwelling species I would go for one pair of the smaller Julidochromis (ornatus or transcriptus) or my all-time favourite suggestion for such cramped situations a pair of Neomlamprologus caudopunctatus.

I had almost the same tank Milingu Milingu described. I had a couple pairs of gold ocellatus with a few shells in opposite corners of the tank, a group of cyprichromis, and a pair of Julidochromis marksmithi and they got along great. My ocellatus weren’t good parents so they never got out of hand and they always hugged the bottom so it was a fun tank to watch

Welcome aboard

I have found the cyps do better in a 72" tank. You are NEVER going to get consistent advice if you ask multiple fishkeepers, LOL.

4ft long 1.5 wide 20inches deep. only display. I have another 240 that is set up heavily planted Bogwood and is stocked with a school of Rummy Nose, a school of pencil fish Adelfi cats Ottos and the centre piece fish is NIGERIAN RED CRIB 1 male and 2 females . That is why I now want the tang tank a complete contract
