It’s Christmas at my house

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I knew a guy in Australia that dedicated a 10 foot tank to a single pair of fish. I thought he was out of his mind, but after seeing video of his scape and how said pair utilize the space, it was such an amazing tank to behold. He chose a pair of Umbee, blue meanies.
A single pair of fish in a large volume of water like that makes a pretty easy maintenance as well!
Happy new year 🥳

Whatever you choose, make sure it's something you want, rather than merely something that is trendy and popular among the In crowd. Who gives a crap what other people think? You are looking at and hopefully enjoying that tank on a daily basis, so make the most of it.

I'm not really a cichlid guy, but I'd find it almost impossible not to include some Oscars in a tank like that if my water were appropriate for them. Parrot Cichlids have always appealed to me as well, but I've never even seen a live one let alone owned them. And I was only partially joking about goldfish...for a low-stress, peaceful and attractive tank they are terrific.

Whatever direction you go, I really hope you are planning upon keeping in mind the water chemistry of your source. If you have a tank housing fish that require RO, de-mineralization, re-mineralization, pH tinkering or all of the above...and its normal water change involves hundreds of gallons...the required preparation of that much water on a regular basis will get real old, real fast. Don't forget that this hobby is supposed to be fun.

Whatever kind of water you have coming out of your tap...I guarantee there are beautiful, interesting and attractive fish that will thrive in it just the way it is. Deciding you simply must keep fish that are poorly suited to your water and require varying degrees of mumbo-jumbo will take the sheen off those species sooner rather than later.

I'm anxious to see which way you go. :)

it just so happens that along with the new system I also upgraded my R.O. unit. I have been a strict believer in starting off with R.O. water for years now with teh mindset that you take out everything from teh water and then just add in what you need. my old R.O. was a 300 gallon per day unit. my other tanks besides this one are 240, 180 and 270 gallon aquarium scattered around my home. when I took delivery of this new system I also upgraded to a complete new R.O. D.I. unit with a capacity of 1000 gallons per day. I want all my fish to thrive not just survive. Its the least I can do for them it is as if I feel obligated to give them the very best in care

The plan is 1 Arowana , 1 fire eel, a pair of high grade chili red oscars a pair of high grade lemon oscars . teh 2 pair of oscars are being sourced from out of the country and then a few Geophagus exact type still to be decided on same as the amount of. was really thinking of a pair of obicularis as well. I am definitely open to suggestions from you guys as far as stocking.
May I suggest a nice colony of blue zaire Moba gibberosa...but of course I admit I am a little biased here 🙂

I would empty my 450gal right now for a pair of Umbee. Unfortunately they can't be imported here.

This is a screen shot of HUKIT HUKIT veija melanura colony. Absolutely stunning & would look sensational in a 10’ tank with a few medium omnivorous fancy plecos as clean up crew 🤗IMG_6070.jpeg

Another species that I would pay handsomely for someone to smuggle them in to my country...😬
