IMG_0704.jpeg Do you have any idea what might have happened to him?

I know this answer might not be the most helpful, but from someone that raised groups of baby gars a few times, sometimes one just dies out of the blue. To me it actually happened again with my tropical gars some days ago.

I have no idea why, maybe they hit the glas, swallowed something to big or had complications due to their rapid growth. I think there is also just a certain number that don't make it naturally.

So if you can't find any reason and all your other fish do well, don't feel to bad, sometimes it just happens.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is very helpful to know that sometimes it just happens. We’re concerned about the red spot and just wondering what could’ve caused that since it wasn’t there when we received the gar from shipping the day before.IMG_0703.jpeg

You should have added that you only received him yesterday and that he shares his tank with other fish. He could have died due to the shock of the transport, tho that is less likely as they are very hardy or maybe due to the influence of his tankmates.

Some cichlids like to bite into the pectoral fins of their rivals while fighting, I have no idea about bluegills tho. Especially since gar do not look like a rival bass/cichlid.

The fins do look like they received some damage, however that alone should not be enough to kill him. Mine often bit each others fins, sometimes even off and Gar in general are very recilient to physical damage.

How big was he, the bluegill and what catfish is in the tank?

The bluegill is about 6 inches long. The catfish is a bullhead about 8 inches long. The gar was with them for just shy of 24 hours. The gar was 5.5 inches long.

I don't know about the bullhead specifically, but usually catfish will notoriously try to eat anything that fits their mouth or gets infront of it, even if it is a similiar size. I can imagine yours tried to eat your gar, the fight killed him and he eventually gave up but to late.

You should not add smaller fish in a tank with a pred. cat.
