Hey Guys,

I’m new to keeping monster fish and recently bought a 125-gallon tank for that purpose. I’ve done a lot of research and am now trying to decide between a few species — Hydrolycus scomberoides, Hoplias malabaricus, and Hydrocynus vittatus.
I know that the tank will be too small in the long run, and I’m planning to upgrade to a much larger pool-style setup later on.
How soon would I need to plan the move for each of these species?
Mostly i'm interested in the tigerfish and the payara.

Hi

I have kept Scomberoides in the past and they are a great fish. Not sure of the tank dimensions but i think you could keep a small group of those in there and have a great little set up. Once they are eating frozen they grow quite well and look lovely as they get older. Don't grow as fast or as big as Armatus either
The tigerfish grows quite fast and unlike the other fish needs loads of space as they are just manic and active non stop.

Hello; Do a search. Over the years so many threads & posts about fish in too small of a tank. Many, if not all, had planned to have a bigger tank before the baby fish grew up. My suggestion is to get fish which will be a good fit in the tank you have when they are mature.

Thanks a lot for the advice! 😊
Yeah, I completely understand your point — I definitely don’t want to end up with fish that outgrow the tank too fast. I just really like these species and wanted to gather some real experiences from people who’ve kept them. I’ll probably start with something smaller and less active for now like the scomberoides wich was mentioned.
