Moba grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I appreciate the insight Ken. I have noticed some days they feed really well, other days not so much. This behavior has perplexed me at times, but I never really thought about reasons.
I don’t try to power feed them. I know they grow slowly, and I don’t want fat looking Gibbs. My feeding schedule revolves around my work schedule. I work weekend nights, so the get fed about 4-5 times per week.
My source water has 5-10ppm nitrate right out of the tap. I haven’t noticed a correlation between feeding activity and nitrate levels but I certainly believe your experience & hypothesis.

Ok, so things might be changing here w my moba group soon. I told myself I was locked in to a 5 year plan to grow them up, slim down to a good breeding ratio and get them breeding. This is still the plan, in part, but most likely on a smaller scale. Here’s why…

Most of you know I’m an Aussie. So, whilst in Australia a friend reached out and told me he is moving to Florida in late May, and asked if I would be interested in his 30” chipped & certificated AUL. The short story is we have negotiated an arrangement that is mutually beneficial.

The 500gal is clearly my only option to house such a fish, and the 125gal is too small for my moba group. I’m planning to resize the moba to a group of 8, & sell the rest. After all, there only cichlids right jjohnwm jjohnwm 😆

As for the 500gal, I still plan to resurface the viewing panel this spring, and move the tank to a better location in our basement. Then stock w the AUL, a fire eel (which is still available locally), my loach group, some bala sharks (same guy as AUL), and perhaps a grow out a black aro. I think this will be a great display 🤗

Once I’m sorted I will create a new thread…

I can't believe you haven't already scooped up that Fire Eel. His persnickety current owner will be tickled pink to hear about your new plans for housing him. You realize that if you hem and haw and mull it over, somebody else will snap up that fish the very morning that you call the guy to tell him the good news?

Haha, as I read your post I am sitting in my truck waiting on a pizza with said fire eel in a styro box in my possession! I msgd the persnickety bloke last week, worked the last 3 nights, and grabbed it up this arvo when I woke up from my beauty sleep! Alas, it is mine! Muh ha ha ha ha 😆

I will get some pics later, but I put the FE in the 125gal as planned temporarily. It is every bit of 24”, not the 18-20” he was advertised as. No harm no foul, once it’s in 10’x3’ footprint it will have plenty of room to stretch its eely fins!
Perhaps I will start a new thread at this point 🤔
