Currently I have an underwhelming Fahaka in a 120. I’m looking for a fish that’s more interactive and have considered Midas for a while. My lfs has 6 small “Red Devils” however I really would prefer a Midas. Online I’m not finding any that are clearly Midas/in stock. Does anyone know where I can get them? Also will a Midas be a significant improvement in personality over a fahaka? I was thinking of starting with a group of 3 to 6 until they grow a bit and I can pick the best single male to keep.

The term ¨Red Devil¨is a catchall LFS term for any of the similar colored morphs, and interactive personality types of Amphilophus cichlid species interbred (intensionally or not) over the years from the great lakes of Nicaragua.
The Midas species morph , Amphilophus citrinillus (as with all Red Devils morphs will) fit into that clade, as far personality goes, and work for your purposes.
It is really not needed to seek out, specific citrinellus per se, to achieve such interaction.
All Amphilophus are basically built that way, when mature with a dominant demeanor.

What about looks wise? I want to get a big thick midas type fish with a big nuchal hump. I heard the Red Devils are less beefy. Or can I assume the lfs ones are good picks?

Sourcing them from a quality breeder, preferably from a pair not too far from wild parentage, is ideal. And even then, the larger your initial group the higher your odds at getting a top tier individual.

That said, we all limit our ideals with practicality.

As mentioned most of the Amphilophus will work.

Now breeding and solo wet pet is two different things. If you go for breeding they will pay more attention to each other rather than you.

This is my Amphilophus I had. He was a Amphilophus Saggitae a less common one as they range out in the center of lakes vs near the shore like RDs and Midas.

I did breed him when he was young. Got five spawns from him then he offed his mate. I tried to get a new mate and he offed them too.
I tried to house him with catfish and pleco neither worked as he was to mean.20190215_121019.jpg20190208_142659.jpg

Finally I gave up all thoughts of multiple fish and kept him solo. From then on he was always watching me and reacting to what I did. Funny thing he even would attack my bird thru the glass...20201113_094936.jpg
