I had no idea they were so uncommon down your way. My home is actually slightly outside of the generally accepted range of the species but I still see them at least a couple times each year during the summer in a marshy wooded area down the road.The Nycticorax nycticorax are on the Illinois Endangered Species list. My property is up against a 230 acre protected fen and it’s very rare to see them. If you do it’s asked that you report the sighting and I’ve only seen 3 in the 22 years living I’ve been living at this house.
Fortunately, I haven't had any perched on my fishtanks yet...
