Chalceus is described to be active, schooling fish that live in high oxygen, fast moving water in their natural habitat. But in the confined space of a fish tank, they are inactive and don't school, but can dart at explosive speed when startled. I've observed macrolepidotus in a million gallon public aquarium, and they cruise solo on the water surface at steady slow pace with no interaction with one another. My macrolepidotus maxed out at 10 inch, stay mostly motionless at one place, and never show aggression nor predatory behavior towards small fish. My yellow fin had the same demeanor but grew bulkier and would likely reach 12 inch if he were still alive. Yellow fin and macrolepidotusare are two different species, and most aggressive behavior reported on macrolepidotus may not necessarily be applicable to yellow fin.

Looks like I will be losing the first of the Tucans to the dreaded slam-into-the-wall. That’s how I lost some fish the last time around. Crazy.

So I transferred them into this tank, there should be enough Java fern to buffer any sprints they take. It’s also on a drip system which means water is pristine.
What helped stop mine from bumping into the sides is putting the plants there and keeping the middle open a little bit, kinda opposite of the tank in those pictures.

Cool, yes, that’s brilliant. This 55 gallon happens to be the only tank I could put them in with some sort of plant buffer. I really didn’t expect them to graduate from the 20 gallon so quickly, but clearly I was wrong. There is no rearranging the Java fern, it’s on piles of driftwood. Fingers crossed this is good enough for now.
How big are yours, how many, what size tank are they in? Got pics?
