Raising a EBJD and Oscar together? Growth rates, bad idea?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Seems like it's going well, glad the JD isn't shy about eating. I would just be careful once the Oscar gets to a size where the JD can fit in it's mouth- even if it doesn't try to before then, it will probably eat anything that can fit.

I hope not. The EBJD seems to be growing. The oscar tries to eat ramshorn snails that are slightly smaller than the EBJD and can't manage to swallow them so he spits them out. The O is actually more of a wimp than the EBJD. When I do water changes the O gets scared and hides. the EBJD is curious and swims around.

They have both colored up nicely. I really like your Oscar.

Nice electric blue. Something I've done to help keep a greedy fish from overeating while others get enough is to use smaller pellets of flakes. Keeps everyone busier and not as easy for an aggressive eater to stuff itself while slower eating fish get some.

One thing to be aware of is behavior of small fish doesn't necessarily predict what happens when adult hormones kick in. Fish that have grown up together may continue to get along, but things can also change and a once mild fish might get more aggressive. Just something to be ready for as they get older.

Yeah my oscar is such a pig. Though the EBJD still gets enough food because I put it in different sides of the tank. But after eating the oscar gets greedy and starts eating the kelp pellets I put in for the bottom feeders. Then his little belly is huge and he can barely swim, yet he keeps trying to eat even more. I started laughing uncontrollably at how stupid he is and my wife wanders over to wonder why a grown man is laughing at a little fish.

I had an Oscar try to eat a cory cat. Not a pleasant sight. The cory got caught in the Oscar's throat. All you could see was the cory's tail hanging out the Oscar's mouth. Took it to a LFS and they used tweezers to pry the dead cory from the Oscar's mouth. Wasn't fun to watch being done.

Are electric blue acaras stronger than electric blue jd's? I am planning to get EBA's, a group of 4-6. Last time I checked, the price was 20.00 for the ebas,

Hmm I might have to rehome the cories as the oscar gets bigger. Right now his mouth is still the size of a large green pea. Still can't fit a cory. I think he's scared of them. Sometimes they try to shoal with him (they're pepper cories so maybe they confuse his dark ass with another cory) so they swim quickly behind him and it freaks him out and he runs away.
