Hey,
Does anyone know which species goes by the trade name "blue jumper cat"? They are found in the Amazon, where local collectors use this name, but I can't find much info on the actual scientific name. Seems to be a pimelodid, but that's as far as I could get.
Thanks!blue_jumper.jpg

Sold prior but looks like megalonema platycephalum.

Thanks, could well be, though I didn't find any references showing M. platycephalum to have this much color or a dorsal filament.

Yea...the color is throwing it off. Maybe viktor will have some fun put thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter .

Jumper catfish appears to be an obscure local reference to some catfish from Pimelodella genus. I'd simply look through the species to find the closest match. https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/genus.php?genus_id=177#1873

Snookn21 used to sell these under the same name.

They are smaller catfish, usually not exceeding 1' but staying well under. Their behavior appears similar to Pimelodus pictus.

Or get good in tank photos and post on Planet Catfish for an ID. That'd be the best bet.

Can't find any matches for Pimelodella, but it's tough to track down some of those guys. I'll try Planet Catfish.

Pinirampus pinirampu perhaps? Has the extremely long whiskers and dorsal filament at smaller sizes. Color and head shape also seem similar but pics taken from the side would help.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

I kind of feel stupid - now I remember that I bought three catfish from Jeff Rapps under the same name - Blue jumper catfish, which Jeff labeled as P. pirinampu. Here are my ID woes of them: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=44864&hilit=pinirampus

I still don't know what they are. They grow exceedingly slowly. Still at ~6".

My guess was mainly based on the dorsal filament. To be honest, though I drool over pictures of many of these fish all day, I only have pictures to look at and not live fish. It doesn't help that so many silvery 'Pim' looking catfish are rarely imported and pictures are sparse, who knows what species are what and what is undescribed scientifically lurking in fish tanks.

I find it quite strange that yours has grown so slowly, according to this (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fme.12082/full) at age 1.5 the mean length of P. pinirampu was nearly 16", which aligns with Amiidae's comments in the Planet Cat thread. You clearly take excellent care of your fish so I'd rule out stunting, though I suppose it could just be a slower growing specimen, wild growth rates are not an absolute. A very, very interesting fish indeed.
