Tips/guide to force feed a pleco?

HexShield has that as an active ingredient, along with epsom salt, is it not at a potency that's useful? I will go buy some and mix my own, but I assumed it was an effective product. I've been moistening the hexshield with a slightly less potent mix of epsom salt and distilled water as per...

Tips/guide to force feed a pleco?

My 11" TL rhino pleco is wasting away. I recently moved across the country with him and several other fish, and I believe that stress allowed a parasitic infestation to take hold. He's refusing food, has a somewhat sunken belly, white and inflamed anus, and his coloration has gone from brown...

How much sway is safe and how much gap between tank/stand?

It's a good idea to put shims under a stand if it rocks. It's maybe 3 bucks for a bundle of plastic shims from a hardware store. From what I've read any torsional stress on a tank is extremely bad. Wood also does fairly bad with sheering loads which is another reason to properly support a stand.

    HELP everything is dying wtf

Growth on mouths and grey scales sounds like columnaris. You'll likely lose the entire stock, and any other tanks that come in contact with the equipment/your hands if they've not been disinfected. Check this page, I've had about a 30% survival rate using the meds they suggest, when caught very...

Eheim Jager wont heat past 74.5°F

Unless your house does that thing where it's 78 in the winter, and 68 in the summer like some climate challenged people I'd say it's in need of replacement. May as well do two cheap heaters and a controller for future safety. It will cost more, but if your livestock is pricey/valued it's worth...

How big of water changes should i be doing?

I do 50% weekly regardless of stock, more and more frequently with heavily stocked tanks. I'll test nitrates to make sure it's enough, which I'd recommend you do as well. I'd figure you'd need 50% almost daily with that stock unless they're all very young. I'd do a drip system personally...

The Truth about Green Terror Growth?

I've only had one, but in 6 months with 80% weekly water changes, a varied diet of massivore, NLS, Fluval, Omega One, and bloodworms/shrip it's gone from ~2 to 5 inches.

    Deep Sand Bed Problems

The risk i believe is a rapid acidification and drop in oxygen from disturbing anerobic pockets. Water changes to stabilize the ph and remove the increased organics would be a good idea. Check ammonia. I use a small pump and a length of hose tied to a stick to stir sand in my 180. Takes less...

    Thinking of Switching to Sand

I'd mix the gravel weekly, just to disrupt the bacteria that forms on the upper layers the few weeks before the shift. Though since you recently switched filters, it'd be a good idea to put it off a solid month. I had no issues when i did a swap, but my filters were well seasoned, and my...

    Ideas on GT sex?

I had a male and female and they looked nearly identical until almost 4 inches. I asked for sexing a bit early as well, got completely random answers. Bulk that little one up and wait it out.

    Siphon/gravity feed question.

My engineer fiancee says you'll need a vent tube to avoid vapor lock. The bend into the sump should be done with a T, and the vertical length should be higher than the tank water, to prevent a siphon. The flow rate will be lower, so oversize your plumbing was her recommendation. The vent...

Best Sump Pump For 1600 GPH

Apparently they're hit or miss. They are Chinese counter fits of quality DC pumps made by Waveline. That said, you can buy an extra for the cost savings, but I'd avoid them. I'd spend the extra on a waveline if I had the funds or if power consumption isn't an issue there's plenty of...

    Aqueon pro heater shell cracking

Jeeze. Reminds me of the Stealth heaters I had melt/blow out way back when. I'm not a fan of plastic heaters over 50 watts. I'm surprised the fish, and yourself are alright. Did a breaker/GFCI trip?

What To Use To Draw On Plexi Glass Tanks

I've no idea, but i did see a thread where a tank had been ruined by dry erase markers. Caused serious crazing in the shape of the words written.

What Sized Drain Pipe For 500-600 GPH?

    I'll be using a 2-3/8ths bit for a 1.5" bulkhead per glass-holes and a few other sites.

    Why are my fish dying?????

Are you having an ammonia spike? When algae dies it rots. Also chemicals are not the way to treat green water. Reduce light duration and strength, while increasing water changes is the safe, and lasting way.
