White growth in gills of female convict cichlid.

There are flowing white growths in the gills of my 1 1/2 year old convict female. She hasn't been eating the last couple of days and finally I saw that she has this rather large white, flowing "growth" coming out of her left gill and a smaller growth on her right gill. The only thing I have...

Cichlid custody dispute among rainbow cichlids. Divorce pending?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a quarantine / fry tank that's only 6 gallons and was going to move the fry there after your comment, but it seems the male has backed off and let the female raise the brood. At least that's how it is right now, but they still fight. The two parents look pretty...

Cichlid custody dispute among rainbow cichlids. Divorce pending?

I have a breeding pair of rainbow cichlids who have successfully bred and raised fry before and have been together without incident for at least 6 months. Their latest batch of fry has led to a real mystery and something I never thought I would see with fish. The male has about half the fry on...

How many people have a dedicated quarantine tank?

Since I wrote the original post I introduced two more neolamprologous pulchers to my other two pulchers in my 20 long. It appears I have two males who DO NOT want to share the tank and so the new male is in my "quarantine" tank for the time being. He's going back to the fish store to exchange...

How many people have a dedicated quarantine tank?

I'm sure this is very common. My current 20 Long Tanganykan was originally my quarantine tank, but those plans got changed because I'm a fish addict. I think my current 6 gallon quarantine is too small for most fish so it will remain a quarantine. At least that's the plan and I REALLY do like...

How many people have a dedicated quarantine tank?

I had a 20 Long that I was using as a quarantine tank, but it recently became a display once I got a small Tanganykan setup going. And like you, I plan on using my quarantine as a multipurpose tank as well. IE as a hospital tank and a place to keep my smaller fry.

How many people have a dedicated quarantine tank?

I have been serious about the hobby for two years now and 4 months ago decided to take things up a notch and added a dedicated quarantine tank to my fish room. I only have four display tanks, but despite that, I feel really good about having a dedicated 5.5 gallon cycled tank sitting on the...

New Tanganykan 20L - how to stock?

Are they a bonded pair? It's a good question. I have had them in the tank for a week and I'm pretty certain one is male and the other female, but they seem to keep their distance and have very little contact with one another. I was hoping they would become a bonded pair over time, but I'm not...

New Tanganykan 20L - how to stock?

I'm a new world cichlid keeper and I'm dipping my toes into Tanganykan cichlids. I have a 20 Long (crushed coral, Ph 7.7, DH 12) with two juvenile lamprologous pulchers (daffodi cichlids), but the tank seems bare. The two fish spend most ot their time in the rock structure I have in the...

    Biggest mistakes?

I liked the first answer on this thread. Not getting a big enough tank is a good one. Another big regret of mine was killing so many fish that I love (fresh water puffers) out of ignorance. They are what moved me from just a goldfish guy to getting into fish in a big way. It's been many years...

    Thorichthys Maculipinnis

I'm with you on Ellioti. I think they are better looking than meeki and they're also harder to find in the hobby which makes them a more desirebale. It's nice to have fish that not every Tom Dick and Harry have kept.

    Thorichthys Maculipinnis

Yes, it's only a temporary situation and my angel is much bigger (and also an aggressive bastard) and should be able to protect himself. TBH, I was more worried about the T. Maculipinnis, , than the anger.

Herotilapia Multispinosa - Juwel Rio 180

I have a breeding pair of rainbows in a 40 breeder and I'm really reluctant to keep much of anything besides Cory's with them. My male is the most aggressive fish I have ever owned and since they breed often, it's not a good idea to keep much in the tank. If you do put something community based...

    Thorichthys Maculipinnis

Just picked one up from my LFS. Was really jonesing for a new cichlid and since this is basically a tricked out firemouth I figured ti would mature (and grow) slowly. It's in quarantine right now, but I plan on keeping it with my angel fish in a 29 until it grows out enough for me to put it in...

    3.5 inch female cichlid tankmates

I REALLY appreciate the feedback because I was thinking with my heart not my head. These three responses just confirm my instincts which I was ignoring because, like most fish keepers, I want more fish. I will heed the advice and won't put another cichlid in the tank. I think another cichlid is...

    3.5 inch female cichlid tankmates

I have a semi planted 40 breeder with lots of caves and ONE, 1 year old female convict which I love. Only problem is I'd like to have more cichlids but not a male convict because I dont want eggs, fry, etc. I had her in there with a male Jewel, until it grew too big and started pushing her...

    Fry not eating enough

Makes a ton of sense. I dont have a place to put my two fry but i will go out of my way to make sure they get their fair share going forward. I wasnt aware of the need for separation. Thanks.

    Fry not eating enough

It's my first spawn of fish (rainbow cichlids) and I'm amazed at the huge size discrepancy between my fry. I have 13 fry that are about 8-10 times the size of my other two remaining fry. A few weeks ago, I noticed that as soon as my fry started eating blood worms, they increased in size VERY...

Are Panda corys more fragile than other cory species?

The Pandas died in a 40 Breeder with a GH of 7.8 a Ph of about 7.3/7.4 and a temperature of 77 F. They are now in a tank with slightly softer (7.3 GH) water with a slightly lower Ph 7.0/7.1, although the two Pandas that are left did fine in the other tank along with my Sterbai and Axelrods.
