OK, let me look at sumps. This is a local business and one of the things they liked about the overflows was the "built in" aspect of the filter system. I will now go in search of a reasonably priced sump set up. Maybe go DIY if I cant find something I like. Thanks for the input!

Okay, some friends of mine were looking to upgrade their 55g and I saw a good price on a 125 and pointed them in that direction. They keep tropicals and the plan was to go with a FX5 filter. The LFS talked them into a 125 with corner overflows. Don't really want to go the wet/dry route on a...

New to DIY tanks. Need help

I have never used those products when it comes to sealing a tank but as for your question regarding the plywood thickness, 3/4" is fine. Make sure you double up on the top and bottom 2x4s so you don't get any bowing.

Sealing plywood products pros and cons

The "work around" in getting the viewing window to seal, using silicone, when you are using liquid rubber is very simple. You simple apply fiberglass resin to the viewing window frame area, silicone the viewing window in place, and then apply LR up to the edge of the silicone.

Sealing plywood products pros and cons

Tank was sold about 9 months ago. Even after being moved I understand it's still doing fine. I guess the tank is about a year and a half old now.

    300 gallon plywood build

Take a look at a bold I did a couple of years ago. I used plywood surrounded by a 2x4 frame. Based on your designs, I think you will find it helpful. Because I framed the tank with 2x4s, I went with thinner plywood without any issues...

Sealing plywood products pros and cons

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?305927-My-315G-Plywood-Tank-Build Here is a link to my build a couple of years ago using Liquid Rubber/Permadri. I did a lot of testing during the build on liquid rubber and how it reacts with silicone, glass and fiberglass resins.

"Pros and cons" experienced comments please

I have never used any the of epoxy products but I did build a 315G tank using liquid rubber a couple of years ago. The product was very easy to use and was pretty forgiving when I messed things up. When using LR there are a few things you need to consider when sealing your viewing window...

Can you take a picture of the wood are you wanting to use (face and edge) and post it here. Might give us a better idea of what it is.

I'd go with 2", anything more is overkill!

    Liquid Rubber on Epoxy? (impermax)

I have no experience with applying LR over epoxy but LR does bond very well to fiberglass resin. If I had to guess I would say you would be OK but I have guessed wrong with LR before. Maybe someone who has tried this will chime in.

    ply tank idea.

I think based on the picture that 3' is the viewing window. I'd go with 3/4" glass.

    Sealant questions

If you have not done so already, start reading through some of the builds that have worked and then decide on a process that is within your skill set. All of the questions you have asked are answered with in the pages of these builds. On my build, which was 315G I used Zavlars Liquid Rubber...

    4300 Gallon Plywood Build (3600+ Take 2)

Pete's build is a mystery to me as well. As many coats as he applied with the LR I can't believe the LR is the issue. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the seal around the viewing window. Of course, when you are dealing with that much water and that kind of pressure I guess anything...

    4300 Gallon Plywood Build (3600+ Take 2)

I am pretty sure Pete used Pond Coat in his build....I am sure he will chime in if I am mistaken. I built a tank about 2 years ago now and used Rubber Coat, which was also made by Permadri(?) and Pete and I exchanged a few messages thinking I had messed up and used the wrong product. I think...

Stacked Lumber Method for Smaller DIY Wooden Tanks

I think a lot has to do with the design and height of the tank. When I first saw Petes' stacked lumber I thought it was a waste of lumber but I really can't think of another way to do it that would be as solid. Yes, he is still working on the leaks, but that has nothing to do with the stacked...
