For a used glass tank that's leak free, I pay $1 to $1.50 per gallon.
$250 for a broken 210 gallon glass tank is a freaking joke. That's how much it should be for one in good useable condition.
Find out how much the replacement panel of glass from a glass shop will cost. Then figure it's...
Just wanted to comment on the 14" max size. Mine is most definitely past that point.
I'd feel bad keeping him in anything less than his 125.
As for keeping dithers and other fish with them, I really think you're risking bloat when they're less than 5". I think it's best to grow them out...
Temp. at 85
Lots of airation
Lots of filtration
Lots of good clean water
I feed NLS There+A only
You're going to need a bigger tank if it's a male. They need astandard 125 as a minimum IMHO.
Past about 5", they're typically past their "bloat phase."
Think about the environment they live in in the wild...20+" monster Dovii swimming around. Of course they're hiding when they're 2".
Dovii are pretty skittish until they're 7+ inches typically. You just have to wait it out.
Treat your stored gas with sta-bil as well. It'll keep the gas good to go when stored for long periods of time. Ethanol in gasoline makes it go bad pretty fast (30 days or so), and sta-bil will keep it from doing so. It'll also help the carb from gumming up if you don't drain the carb when...
125 gallon tank with:
real hardwood oak stand
2 lights
2 magnum 350 canisters
Marineland 300 w heater
3 penguin powerheads
Glass lids
A ton of slate
All pretty much brand new for $300
Actual best deal I have found on craigslist was my truck. $2800 for a very nice 1999 dodge dakota...
If your tinfoils are in a losing battle, my opinion is that SD's aren't going to make it either.
And they're too expensive to gamble with. A true dither shouldn't cost $30 a pop, that's crazy.
Haven't heard of anyone soaking a piece in a lake before. Like duanes said, be careful of picking up parasites and other critters if you're doing that.
I've always soaked in clean containers like duanes mentioned. Some wood has sank in a couple of weeks and some has taken months. Just...
I like the penguin powerheads. They come with a bracket to hang it over the edge of your tank so it won't fall like some of the suction cup only ones tend to do.
Plus, they're cheap and every part on it is serviceable/replaceable.
The hobby of fishkeeping really has come a long way in a short time. Makes you wonder what we're doing right now that people will laugh at in a few years...
You can do most sa/ca cichlids in a 75 for life (excluding Dovii, Jags, Umbee, and Haitiensis).
Take your pick. Lots to choose from.
Might I suggest Istlanum or Grammodes. Most of them are very aggro. They're also awesome fish.
I used to run 2 ac 110's on my 75 gallon. They were great. Lots of flow for a 75G. Kept the water very clear with BIG fish in that tank.
What I found:
1) It's awesome how you can set up the media about however you want. My favorite was filter floss on the bottom and a bag of matrix for...
