Black heaters on a black background always works for me, a 3D background is definitely cool but like you said, it can be expensive. I'm assuming you'll be using a cansiter and not a sump, if thats the case, there's always the option of in line heaters. Good luck and make sure to post pics when...

They're not fancy, don't have any special gadgets, are relatively cheap, seem pretty tough and I've always had good results with Aqueon Pro heaters.

Thank you for the compliment, as far as plants up top go, I'm going to try to keep it simple: The large areas will house Pothos, Philodendron and maybe a Peace Lily or two. The small hanging pots will probably be relegated to smaller flowering plants and spices (not sure which ones yet).

I've always bought it pre bagged in the 100ml pouches. I've still got some of the first pouches I ever bought (like at least 4 or 5 years old).

Don't see why you couldn't use that, it's an E27 so it is in fact a standard bulb size. Make sure to post some pics when you're done!
