i am going to be using a 5 gallon bucket and have a huge pump on the bottom with a pipe attached to it running in the center to the top of the bucket.poring water into two 55 gallon tanks. i am going to have to smaller pumps one in each 55g poring water into the 5gallon bucket. and i will have my media stacked in the bucket. was even thinking about having a hand vac (python) in each tank instead of a small pump. would that work good ?¿? any one know??¿ might try it...idk and what do u guys think of the idea about the sump bucket?

....y ?¿? please no redic responses to the thread if u are going to say some thing please back it up with reason.thnx

Yeah, don't do it.

Here are the two main reasons.

1) A 5 Gallon Bucket is a little too small for a sump. See if you can at least find a cheap used 10g or even 20 for sale. Or even those sterilite storage containers (You can get a 30g one for like 15-20 bux, depending on location. Some dollars stores have them too.)
You need to make sure that your sump can handle a fair percentage of your setup's total water amount.

2) You'd have to precisely and accurately make sure that the flow of that one big pump is completely equal to the total flow of the two smaller pumps. And that's pretty much impossible. Anything even slightly different than "equal" will only cause a flood. Not to mention, you can't guarantee that the flow of the big pump will be exactly split in half if you tee it off.

Same idea with the hand vac, except now if there's a power outage, your aquarium will empty itself into your tiny bucket.

Look into overflows. Overflows make sure that your aquarium is at a constant water level, pouring out any excess water that your pump flows back into your sump. So in effect it will pour an equal amount as your pump (assuming it's large enough) and no more, no less.
And if there's a power outage, the overflow will stop, since your pump will not be putting more water into your aquarium (without power.)
You can buy Hang-on-Back overflows, make your own (out of acrylic or PVC-- check the threads) or even get the back of your tank drilled or something.

alright cool. im getting at least a 20g, and now i am planing on having the water flowing into the tank a little slower then power of the gph on the one big pump. is that okay ?¿?

also for who ever wanted to know what kinda pump. its a Cal Pump model s900, 900gph. had it on my outside pond. but upgraded and had it lyin around for a while thought i would put it to use.

What do you mean exactly? You're gonna choke down your pump so it's not pumping at full power?
Are you still gonna use the other two pumps?

yes im going to use two small pump one in each tank almost equivalent to the one big pump.(900gph). Can people who have sumps hooked up to twoo tanks please respond to this i need some help

your sump is fed by gravity from your overflow ,,what ever your pump will pump from the sump is returned by your overflow if you don't have a overflow you'll need to get one
