08TRDOFFROAD's 45 Gallon Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had been looking at the Mag 3 or 5, and the Quiet One 2200.

Are The mag drives higher quality than the Quiet ones? They are definitely more expensive!

Well I just wanted to throw some new pictures up.

Here are a couple of my Green Toadstool Leather, it has finally started opening up regularly.

And now some more growth shots of the Green Birdsnest! I cannot believe the amount of growth I am seeing out of this frag!

As of 5/12/2010...

looking good.

the 300 would be perfect with a mag 5. for a return pump i usually stick with mag's but the quiet one pumps are good. ive also used via aqua pumps and i like them too.

Well, over the last couple days I have noticed that my xenia is not open and pulsing, it is balled up and not looking the greatest, but my other corals look great and are growing (well at least the birdnest). What could be causing this? I know I am probably due for a water change, but would like some input as to what else might be causing this.

+1

Although sometimes softies go through phases...plus they have like a molting thing they do.

Give it a couple days, or an h2o change and see if it gest better.

Sofites are very sensitive to alleopathic competition sometimes from other softies, so it could have been that toadstool you added.

I did a 10% water change and nothing improved. I also noticed that my lenses on the Halides were pretty crusty with salt deposits. I cleaned them off and lowered them a few inches wondering if it might be suffering from lack of light. I haven't had a chance to check anything other than salinity after the WC. I will try to run all my parameters and post tomorrow afternoon.

In other news I added two Koralia nano 425's to the tank and I have to say I am pretty disappointed with their output. Their GPH rating is very misleading. My Maxi Jet 1200 that is rated at 295 gph pushes much more water then they do! I kind of feel like I wasted $60. I am hoping that once I get the sump up and running the added 300 gph offow will be adequate with the nano's...

Well, this morning before work I tested my water...

Temp: 79 degrees
Salinity: 1.025
DKH: 4.8
Alk: 1.713 meq/l
PH: 7.7
Ca: 400 mg/l

It appears that my PH, Alkalinity and Calcium are low...the alk is about half of what it should be according to my test kit.

I have a hard time grasping water chemistry so I am going to need some help fixing it. How do I go about raising PH, and Alkalinity? I looked in Drs Foster Smith magazine and found that Kent Tech CB part A and b will raise Calcium and buffer the system. Is this an appropriate suppliment or is there something out there that is better or cheaper??? Help!!

not good. i would recommend spending the $ on a hanna alkalinity meter(49.00) and a decent ph monitor like a milwalkee. calcium is decent at 400. the cheapest way for u to buffer all 3 at once would be a kalk drip or kalk for ato. if that is to complicated for u i would recommend the 2 part starter set from bulk reef supply. i would also check mag levels.
