1/2" acrylic?

What happened to acrylic being 70 times stronger than glass. With a support around the edges, it might be ok

It's not and never was.

I have heard various numbers thrown out there, but it certainly isn't 70x stronger, the highest I have heard is 17x stronger, but this is not really accurate, as "strength" is a combination of many factors. Acrylic is at least 10x more impact-resistant than glass, but it really isn't "stronger". Impact resistance is just one measure of strength, resistance to bending and hardness are a couple more measures, and in both these attributes glass is actually "stronger". That is why similarly-sized tanks are generally built with close to the same thickness material whether they are made of glass or acrylic.

Glass has less deflection, but the strength properties really aren't that far apart.
