Hey guys, i was just browsing the home depot site and came across a 1/2 hp submersible water pump for $89.95. here are the specs (they can be found in the home depot website, under 'pumps'):

The VIP50 is a unique, 1/2 HP utility pump that has capability of passing 1/2 in. solids such as leaves, pebbles and other debris without clogging. The bottom suction design of the pump removes water down to 1/4 in. of the flooded surface while the motor is thermally protected to prevent overheating. The VIP50 can pump up to 2500 GPH.

• Pumps up to 2400 GPH
• Drains water down to 1/8" of surface
• Built in easy to use handle
• Oil-cooled thermally protected motor prevents burn outs.

Can this be used as a cheaper alternative for aquarium use? if so, that is a sweet deal! your input is very much appreciated!

best,

If you watch Harbor Freights sales, they have their 1/2 hp pump for $40. The problem with large submersibles is the heat they put out. The good thing is you can sell your heaters. I was running my three tank system off a 1/6 hp submersible and getting free 95 degree heat in my tanks. Kiss any cold water fish goodbye. Does wonders for colors in tropicals though.

Isn't that still going to cost more than the Danner mag drive 24 in power.. like taking double the wattage per hour... After a couple months you will have saved money just going with the mag 24 for 130.00-140.00?

Six minutes might be the fastest bump yet :D

You are right, the electricity saved will quickly pay for the difference of a Danner or even a Quiet One.

I have done that before (way too many times). Just never thought of disguising it as a bump. I learned something today :naughty:

What pump?
