Mine will take blood worms...when nobody is lookin....she ate that one earthworm....but hasnt eaten anything today...yet.She wont even look at the sinking carnivore pellets....

I have put a nightlight of sorts under the tank that directs light into the tank through a bare spot in the sand that the powerhead makes. Tonight I am going to try some small sliced up shrimp and bloodworms. Tomorrow I will go to the bait shop and pick up some worms.
She is still VERY shy. I sneak up on her in the middle of the night to catch a glimps.....I know she is out cruising around at night....but as soon as she sees me, or a light comes on...she scoots back to her spot under the root and buries herself and during the day.......... she stays buried.

I am at the point of getting rid of all the other fish in the tank and just having the ray.....but in doing that it is kinda like a point of no return. I hope she will start swimming around a bit instead of only moving a cpl inches...and doing THAT when I am not looking!!

cover the tank and cut the lights for a week. She will come around.

So I went to the local bait and tackle shop today and picked up some Dew Worms. This was the only "live" bait they had available. I asked where they came from...ie a worm farm?? They told me that they were wild caught and brought in from Ontario...

So what is the difference between purchasing worms that I have no idea where they were caught...or pulling them out of my garden where there is no pesticides or fertilizers used?

Do I have to be THAT careful?

I thought that the bait store would have brought in farm raised worms. But I guess if you are just using them to CATCH fish...not feed them, it doesn't really matter how pesticide and parasite free they are...as long as they are fat.

You dont have to be that carefull, i dig worms wherever possible, never seen any il efffects whatsoever, this has bin up for discussion before on here, and there has never bin an agreement. Chop the worms up in pieces 1-2 inch, they smell more when cut in half + easyer to eat.

Well thats good to know....I then have an endless supply of food in my backyard for free!!:grinno:

Bit of an update on the ray...

Last night she was super active...swimming all over the place, washing the glass (all with the lights off). So I threw in some finely cut up market shrimp, mussels and blood worms. She went after them quite aggressively...then the rest of the fish in my tank caught a whiff of what was there and cleaned house. I am seriously thinking about getting rid of the rest of my fish except maybe a few.
I watched the ray for at least an hour with just the light from the TV...thought I would turn one of the lights on in the house so I could see better....surprise surprise...she didn't hide. Watch with a big grin on my face for another hour till she decided to bury herself because I tried to get too close of a look. Today when I went to work she was buried and when I cam ehome from work, she was in pretty much the same spot!

Maybe she has her sleep cycles all mixed up!!:screwy:

We will see if she eatsx some worms tonight.

You could put a divider in til she eats? Eggcrates, net, whatever, judt make sure you dont use anything that could harm the water. You could also try feeding the other fish first, shrimp for them, then worms for the ray after. I always took ou the rest of the fish when rays arrived, cus of the same problem as you. Once i did put 8 15cm discus in a 200l tank for this reason(not proud of it :p )

ive just got my new motoros and i had to put my 1 foot oscar in my 2 foot tank so the rays would be ok! i feel hell bad :(

So tomorrow is going to be a big day....I have sold all my fish off to my LFS and they are being moved out tomorrow. I am going to keep my Dat....but.... this is the best thing for my ray.
I have also discovered....now that my ray is moving around a bit that her belly is looking a little red.....this has been caused from having Tahitian Moon Sand as a substrate. This will be taken out tomorrow as well and replaced with....????
I called all the local pool supply stores and the pool filter sand that they supply is silica based...not quartz. I don't really want to go with play sand and the sands available at the LFS are really pricey....like $40 for 20lbs!!!

So what are my best options?

Not looking forward to this job.
