1,500 kinds of venomous lizard

Oh I didnt know he had a forum! I havent made much of an effort to chat with him, but now I will when I find the time. I've been busy with other forums (varanus.net ftw!!!). I talked to him on kingsnake.com's chat week and he cleared up a lot for me. But I got banned for cursing one too many times (lesson learned!) so I have to miss out this year and just settle for reading the transcripts.... *sigh*

Do you talk to him a lot Ophiuchus?

Thats very interesting. I know that the V. Grsieus complex has a higher level of "venom"/components in its salivary glands that causes discomfort in their bites. Also V. Komodensis of course has the most toxic components/bacteria of any varanid bite. I would like them to do an example on V. Salvadorri as they have huge bulges coming from their top jaw line and would be very interested if their components are somewhat toxic due to their semi arboreal lifestyle. Interesting article none the less. Bryan's work is widely admired through varanophiles such as myself and throughout academia.

Well Gilas and Beadeds secrete venom from venom glands.... varanus seem to have some of those same components in their salivary factories V. Griseus being the most studied at this point and we all know about V komodensis salivary bacteria. Someone needs to spend a fair amount of time taking this to the next step and start comparing and contrasting gila venom with some of the components in Varanus saliva I use those two as an example.

If that was true, hognoses and most colubrids would be illegal. But to my knowledge hognoses are not illegal in any area for being venomous. But theyre probably banned in some area just for simply being an icky snake. *rolls eyes*

It might not be a bad idea to REGULATE large dangerous lizards, but I don't think monitors, tegus, and igs should be illegal anywhere but southern Florida (at least for the new few years). Our hobby would have a much better name if it was well-managed. By that I DO NOT mean banning anything and everything remotely harmful to the human species. Ever heard of the 4 inch rule? *rolls eyes again*

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Brian do a decent portion of his research on perenties as well? I haven't looked at his research that much, but thats something that I had in the back of my head.

Hey may have I didnt read it... I should of been more specific... this research should span out and reach all geographical portions of varanus species. There could be degrees of toxicity and such just by where the animal maybe from. Its interesting and at its baby stages.... but noone ever wants to spend money to fund anything in terms of meaningless reptiles... they would rather fund the big the bad and the ugly ha ha ha ha ha big animals rule WWF you wont ever see a small varanus on their site.... too bad!

Well said. Nice point on how they don't ever want to spend money! You'd think enviormental/science issues would have money coming out their butts! Haha, if only that was the case. :(

I wonder if he did anything with geckos? Aw heck, I'll join his forum and bug him about it lol.

We won't ever see small varanids on what site? Varanus.net? All you see there are the little guys! Or were you talking about Brians forum or what?

Cheers, big ears
