1,780 gallon intex pool stocking ideas ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any that are big enough to stay off the menu, all of these should work if they are the right sizes.
RTC, TSN, RTCxTSN, Achara (marmoratus), Niger,Giraffe and probably a lot more that I can't think of, as long as they have enough space and are to big to be eaten then it is usually ok but remember that catfish have a very deceptive mouth size lol

Not sure about the irwini, even the females max out at 2' but then again I have never seen a RTC more than 3' in captivity. It might work but there is a risk of loosing 1 if not both of them. Another thing to think about is that reds grow extremely fast and I think irwinis grow fairly slow so you would need to buy an almost fully grown 1 I would think.

Filtration? when stocking our 10' diam intex I didn't take that into account as well as I should have... doesn't matter the volume if your not filtering it adequately. as for tank-mates ect I have 2 big cats in ours along w/ 5 gar.... imho abit understocked ( we do a 50% every 2 weeks and our nitrates are still around 20ppm)

Get a 45epdm liner for the pool... it will cost as much as the pool itself did.. but It would have saved us a lot of time/energy/frustrations had we taken this advise given by others when we set ours up. Even then we are trying to fix a leak... -.-..

I would put no more then 4 large cats in our 10' diam pool ( roughly 1k gallons) and imho I think that is pushing it with more then adequate filtration on it. atm we have our TSN and Hybrid.. and eventually I would like to add a RTC but we have another TSN growing out and an ARTC... imho your bigger issues will be if the cats play nice, big cats can claim large areas... a single large cat can easily claim a 1,780 gallon intex pool if it so desires.

Do you think that an 8,000 gph pond pump hooked up to two 55 gallon drums would suffice

What will the filter medium be in the drums? I doubt that it will be enough, actually. How many pounds of fish will you have, and how much feed will you add per day. That is your basis for how much filtration you need.

Just to give an idea of how much filtration...

My 4000 gal rubber pond 40'x6'x3' -- http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=29488&hilit=pet+catfish -- had small gravel substrate (1700 lbs; called river nuggets, various size, contained a bit of sand too) and 100 gallons of nylon mesh scrubbies for a filter media (~2000 scrubbies plus some filter pads). The pump was 2000 gph. I had ~300 lbs of fish in there at the max and had no problems with water. There were also a couple of 50 gal plastic tubs full of plastic plants that helped filtering too. Lots of air bubblers.

After extra-heavy feedings, I'd detect more than 0 ppm of ammonia next morning, so I just split them up in smaller but more frequent feedings.
