Okay I see that. This fish ID thing is very confusing:nilly: common names....made-up names.....latin.....scientific......hy-breeds...not to mention, bastards like me who "let" their fish cross-breed!:naughty:

I am so lost.

There is your problem!
While I would not, personally, pin a definite name on most unidentified Aulonocara, Copadichromis or Otopharynx females unless their physical characteristics were absolutely unique to their species and/or I had a pHD in ichthyology lying around to boost my confidense :naughty: - you can't say for sure just by looking at them.
You'll find pictures which conflict with eachother floating around on the internet. If you look at the O. tetraspilus at this site - which is by most counts very reputable but not without it's mistakes, it would conflict with the picture you found of "O. tetraspilus" off a search engine. Interestingly the search engine picture looks very similar to the elusive true Otopharynx ovatus (aka Copadichromis ovatus) with the small "dashed" spots and more than likely is.
Here you can look through both genera yourself and see what comes up, unfortunately they do not have pictures of O. tetraspilus. This site IMO is the most reliable in relation to Malawi cichlids.
And then there's this little beauty of an atlas. If you want to go crazy finding females of all sorts of names and species go right a head. :D
You may walk away from the whole thing pulling your hair and just dubbing your little darling the Mystery Maiden. :grinyes:

I live in this area of the country and travel to the same stores. I can confirm that she is a hap mlotto either bred by me or someone I sold babies to. I do sell fish to the store in question. And I have seen the fish in person.

As far as the father of the fry goes I dont know. It is possible that the female picked up somebody elses eggs.

Cichlidfinder guessed it and Super G nailed it, again! He told me that the rusty colored ones look like my red top kimpuna. --a 2nd female in the all male tank!?! Well seemed off the wall but right now the mlotto is holding AND one of my "Male " kimpuna is holding. (Pictures are soon to come) This fish does not look like a female--beautiful color and egg spots.

You think you know a fish.....and bam.... YOU'RE WRONG!

Hats off to Super G.

here are some pictures of the fish in question in differant stages. And included are the rusty fry from the female dark purple fish pictured. BTW: both the male and female parents died but I have 8 fish left from 3 spauns.

In talking to more and more fish people, it is the concencious that the blue ahli is the father. (? on spelling of concenious) there is no damn spell check on this site to help idiots like me.:nilly: :irked:
