I'm looking at getting a new tank for a project i have, its a 1.8m x 0.6 m x 0.6m tank, the only problem is that its made from 8mm glass with a 10mm base. The tank has bracing in all of the joins aswell as 2 cross braces on the top. I'm not worried about the base as i am building my own stand with 7 cross braces so a brace every 30cm and the tank will sit on polystyrene aswell as chip board. i just want do know does anyone have a tank with these dimensions made from this glass. Reason I'm getting it is because my one friend at the local fish store is giving me 30 percent off and letting me take advantage of his staff discount as he does not like his boss. Please give your advice guys.

No it has not, but if i fill it and it bursts the next day they will cover it but not if it bursts a week down the line.
I have a 6x2x2....I can tell you that mine is made with 10mm glass, and bracing, with a20mm base.
I would not by that tank, it will hold 600kg of water when full and glass will/can take a few weeks to react to stress...
Spend the money now, get a well built tank and save yourself the heartache from coming home to find all your fish dead in the lounge and your house ruined
Even with my tank, because I got it for a great price I though there could be something wrong with it so before I put it in the house I left it in the garage full of water for 2 weeks to make sure everything was ok..

8mm sounds really thin for that size tank. My calculator has that at a 1.5 safety factor. Could it be hardened or tempered glass? That would make more sense.
No i think the tank builder just went cheep with the build, I'll give this one a skip and look elsewhere.
I know @ 20" tall 8mm works but for 2ft tall I would stay away, sometimes I even think 10 mm for 2ft is not enough.

Agree with the above, 8mm might be ok if you don't want to fill it up all the way, but for a tank of 60x60 or 2'x2' WxH you really want 10mm glass at least.

Does the safety factor take braces into account?
Let them fill it at the store and maybe check for bowing etc?
I would probably give it a miss.
Is it built by a local tank builder from flat glass sheet or a mass produced tank? I've seen quite a few 8mm, 60cm hich tanks, but the ones made with 3 pieces of glass (front and sides are one piece with a small bend). It all depends on the bracing.
