I like all these suggestions.

Pimelodus blochii, P. ornatus, P. tetramerus, and all other smallish pims are good.

Sun cats are good too - it is debatable they will grow to 1.5' (SL - standard length, meaning not counting the tail), not any time soon anyway. But these would do much better in a group if you wanna see them. The same for the pims.

Aguarunichthys torosus is a superb choice. Very strong, muscular fish. Rare. Should easily reach 1.5' TL (total length). http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=725

Hoplos are superb foragers and cleaners. Their mouths are a bit small though. They are called porthole catfishes too.

With any of these, you will probably have to look for trade-ins or larger fish. What's usually sold (2"-4") is probably too small to defend itself.
