Disappointing, I know.. but the idea brought up about Convict x Barred Midas over dozens of generations sounds a bit more plausible. However, in that case you wouldn't have the 7"-8" Convict you initially desired but rather a 7"-8" poser.
Convict x Texas is a really chunky fish very grey and boring to look at gets 8inch plus
My female con mated with a male fennestratus. I got really exited about the possiblites but 50% eggs fungused and i had like 10 wriggling fry which died before the free swimming stage. so i guess its a non viable genetics..
i wonder whether you could cross breed a con and a trimac could be a great looking fish.

The largest I have seen is in my pond at 9". The key is big water and years to grow. This one is eight years old.
