Don't do carp. They are to a koi what a wolf is to a dog. And they'll cross breed and you'll get some ugly fish lol.

I second the mosquito fish though. Breed like rabbits, eat bad stuff, and feed the good stuff.

If his yard was fenced off I'd say throw in a basking spot and add some turtles. But without a fence there's a good chance they'll just wonder off.

I've had black fin labeo and Hi Fin Banded sharks live in outdoor ponds well. They can tolerate cold weather and arent picky eaters.

Since you live up North(?) I would catch some Hogsuckers / Goby / Sculpin / Drums / Sticklebacks etc - fish that wont neccessarily bother the Koi

I dont know about michigan , but here in pennsylvania if you have a pond that size you can purchase trout and pan fish from our state fish commission rather cheap. many people here buy them for muskie bait. Is it an actual living pond with plant life,etc or mostly a runoff pond that may shrink alot in a dry year?

Sturgeon are super cool fish, active all year around. Try not to get them too small, easy prone to disease at that age, aim to stock around the 6-8inch mark
