10 Gal Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ohhh. Big. Maybe someone can chime in with an exact size. But. Big. You seem to be a future MFK'er on the rise... what's your major? I'm English, but if I had a better background in math, I'd be biology, on my way to a fish vet... You can always have two loves!

thanks guys and im going to look into a bigger tank... whats the minimum size for LMB?
well bass grow very quick, not as quick as some fish. But after the first year they should be around at least I say 10-12 inchs. So a big tank is needed I wouldnt go with anything under 150. And if you want more then 1 bass at least a 200 gal.

Now with a 40 gal breeder you could keep most sunfish like bluegill, Green sunfish, etc.

Im majoring in nursing but love fishing and everything about fishing... especially Largemouth. So i wanted to try to have a pet in the dorm with me but i guess that can wait til im actually making money. Thanks for all the help guys and ill be coming back with more questions soon.

If you want to keep natives, there are plenty that will do well in a 10 gallon. Missouri has lots of small, pretty darters, minnows, and killifish. You could also keep pygmy sunfish (not true sunfish) which are no bigger than neon tetras but have sunfish looks and attitude. Other native options are Enneacanthus sunfish (not native to MO, but several online vendors sell them), sticklebacks (mean little things, you'd have to keep them alone), crayfish, or shrimp.

If you upgraded to a 30 gallon you could keep mid-sized sunfish such as dollars or orangespots.

I agree with Noto. If you want natives, just go for something smaller. If you want to catch them yourself, then you may be limited to stock. But I suggest some small darters (swamp, Iowa), or killies like mentioned. If you don't mind paying for natives, check out aquaculturestore.com or the vendors on the NANFA forum.
If you really want something to have and look at that is somewhat 'predatory', then check out the mudminnnows. Central mudminnow will get too large, but look for the Eastern mudminnow as well (fit just fine in a 10 gal). They tend to wait and then pounce on prey like shrimps or small mealworms, etc.

Yeah, mudminnows are awesome! Some people call them "pygmy pike"; they've got the attitude to back it up.
