10 Gallon Ideas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am in the same boat as you finishing up my larger tanks right now and looking for a new inexpensive project. It's also nice to have an established tank you can plop a fish that's getting bullied while you re arrange your tank.

Anyways I think I'm going to go for a small planted tank as I have never tried live plants. But I'm still deciding. I'm also thinking about using it as. "grow" tank as my local fish store is awesome (shout out to fantastic fins in Livonia!) and gets in a ton of really rare stuff and I often make impulse buys so It would nice to have a tank to put them while they grow out and I can figure out where I want to put them later on.

Keep us posted on what you pick and how it turns out good luck!

Im currently breeding endlers in my 10 gallon theyre a small active fish and theyre nice to look at with their awesome coloring. It also doesnt take much to breed them and their also extremely hardy. I see them in multiple LFS's around my area but i would still say they are relatively uncommon. I had to look around for 3 months before i found females, as most stores only sell male endlers as they look prettier and people dont want everyone to be breeding them.

I always wanted poison dart frogs, and there are species which can fit in a 10 gallon. I can't say how hard they are to keep but Dendrobates Leucomelas (bumblebee dart frog) would be my next choice for a 10 gallon.

Wow for such a negative start to this thread its turning out pretty awesome.

I'm going to look up some info on the Badis fish, I have seen them for sale a while ago and thought they were cool. are they called "chameleon fish" as a nickname?

Djlamonica I know where you are coming from, there are a few LFS in my City that get rare stuff in from time to time, thats why I have a 20 long set up for growing out impulse buys. Right now my 225 only has,
Tetra dithers
a pink tailed chalceus
a flag tail
an oscar
a chocolate cichlid.

as you can see its extremely understocked I am growing out some Bichirs and a datnoid to join them. So the 10gal will be a perminent project. would be cool to get some live plants and stuff in there.

Well I've decide want I'm going to do with my 10 g have you? Wold love to hear.

So my plan is to use a sand substrate regular tan and do a planted tank (unsure of plants yet up to suggestions) then add some type of dwarf cichlid and hope to get a breaking pair. Leaning towards 1 electric blue ram and 1 regular blue ram.

Anyways hope your having as much fun as I am planning/setting up a small tank as I am!

Ignore the haters... obviously they don't realize MFK is about the Monster Passion people have for this hobby, and not the size of the tank or fish we keep...

Anyway, to answer your question, personally i would have probably gone and created a Shrimp tank of some sort, or maybe even use it to house a Thai Micro Crab or something... a nice little planted tank can actually go a long way if you take some time and plan it out...

pygmy cories are good for a 10, although mine did end up in a 55 and soon into a 90...
what can I say, I like big tanks.

I had lots of plants, 9 pygmy cories, 6 otocinclus , some malaysian trumpet snails, and some neocaridina shrimp. a nice active tank that looked so good I had to make it bigger.

Don't mind the haters man, MFK is about the passion, not the size of the tank...

My favourite ideas would be:
A heavily planted Shrimp tank
An African dwarf frog tank
or a fiddler crab tank
