10 Gallon Planted Tank (Pics + Vids)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've only bought plants a few times from online vendors, and each time I was disappointed. Since they only use 'stock' photos, you never know what you're actually getting. They skimp out on the quantitites, and many of their plants are grown emersed, so it takes time to transition to a submerged state.

Lately I've gotten all my plants from other forum members over at plantedtank.net. They have great plants for sale all the time at low prices. Shipping is just the standard $5-10. And many times members will give plants away via a RAOK deal (random act of kindness). I've gotten tons of free plants this way.

Also, look to see if you have a local aquatic plant society/club. Going to the meetings is a great way to get free plant trimmings. We had a meeting two weeks ago and I walked away with a gallon-sized ziplock bag full of rotala :)

Jose, very good points! I still recomend aquariumplants.com, as I have received satisfying shipments from them though a store I worked at very recently.

Forum trades, Fishclub meetings, and club auctions are no doubt some of the best places to not only nerd it up with plant enthusiasts, but to score big on new plants! Remember, once someone starts offering you freebies, you gotta give back when you've grown too much of your own!

Plant aquarists seem quite willing to lend experience, as well as seed your tank with greenery. A very nice group in a hobby so vast.

This seems very common. Even international industry leader Tropica of Denmark does this. It's frustrating to receive a beautiful plant, and know you'll have to baby it a bit or rehabilitate it after you've sunken it! :D lol

Yeah, seems like most suppliers do this these days. I see a nice bushy plant at the LFS, then it melts away in my tank :( I only buy plants grown in aquariums now!

Very active snails compared to mine. Your nerite is huge compared to mine, too. How long did it take to reach that size?

I would say that my Nerite's are 3/4" in diameter. I bought 3 just a couple weeks ago. 2 are in this tank, along with 2 otos, and i think just 2 Amano shrimp.

The video clip of the nerite snail is actually sped up a bit. Most of the time they work dilligently on eating a small patch of algae before moving on.

So how do you think the LEDs are doing on the tank? I'm really considering getting an LED fixture, I've just heard very mixed reviews on them...
