ok i have an extra 10 gallonthat i want to make planted i have all the normel stuff light filter but would i have to get a whole new lighting system like a hood or can i just get bulbs for mine an what else wouls i need for it???
You could use your light, but you have to choose the right plants. Chances are your lights are not adequate for 95% of the plants commonly seen in the hobby.
you can grow quite a lot of plants under a single floresent tube , just make sure it says it can grow plants . they will have to be very low light plants tho and dont expect fast growth .
You can get the small, screw in compact fluorescents for your hood. That's what I have on my 10gal CRS tank. Pretty decent light for a small tank - though I don't have high-light plants in there - rotala, anubias, crypts
at walmart they sell a mini aquarium bulb made by "lights of america" that is a screw in flourescent bulb, they are 10w and about $4....you put two in a 10g hood which gives you 20w of light, plenty to grow low light plants and some easier low/moderate light plants.
