I'm sure we all have at least 3-4 10 gallons lying around collecting dust in our garage and I'm sure we're always tempted to set one up every now and then. Well, I just cleaned up mines...

What should I throw in it?

Make it a planted tank with some neons...very nice looking!
hatchets are nice too

I was kind of leaning towards the planted idea, I basically have everything I need to start. Was thinking about maybe putting in a crayfish though.

A friend just told me I should put a 5 gallon into the 10 gallon as a seperation and within the couple inch gap grow plants and within the 5 gallon put in neons, inverts, etc. Whacha think?

Umm...I have never heard of that before...how do you plan on filtering that?
Plus the plants and the fish are good for each other...why would you separate them?

Lol idk, the idea my friend gave me was kind of interesting though, the separation part at least.

Whoah. That's interesting. You should try it out. I do wonder how it'd look with the plants inside and the neons outside instead. Then you can use a HOB to filter.

I don't mean to knock your idea...it just doesn't make much sense to me.
The plants probably wouldn't do well unfiltered either.
You could simply either put all of your plants on the outer edge of the tank...or get a few bunchy swords to put in the middle it would be the same effect...and be beneficial to the fish and plants.
Plus imagine all the extra work...cleaning twice the amount of glass
