I don't mean to knock your idea...it just doesn't make much sense to me.
The plants probably wouldn't do well unfiltered either.
You could simply either put all of your plants on the outer edge of the tank...or get a few bunchy swords to put in the middle it would be the same effect...and be beneficial to the fish and plants.
Plus imagine all the extra work...cleaning twice the amount of glass

Well I was going to have both sides filtered of course but now that you mention it it does seem like it'd be a lot of work. I'll think about it, if anything I'll just do a normal 10 gallon planted set up with some neons, never tried it before.

How do you plan on filtering both though...cause if its a HOB I doubt that the filter would make it across the thickness of 2 tanks...other wise the while filter would be in the 10 gal's water...and I don't think that would be a good thing.

Why not neons on the outside and roses on the inside. You can water your roses when you do water change.

the 5-in-10 idea is, um, interesting . . .

nah, jk, you could always try it and see what results . . . but another idea might be a heavily planted tank and some dwarf puffers . . . at least, that's what I'm thinking of doing with one of mine

I'd definately have to rig it. get some extra plastic tubing but I've done more complex things so it wouldn't be too hard. If anything seal off the out take, put a hole there and let maybe a half inch tube lead the out take wherever I want it. Or Vice versa for the Intake.
