I have a 200g tank with cichlids and a common plec, the plec is now about 10 years old and maybe 22" long.I've no problem with the plec other than he's stopped eating algae and everything in the tank's turned green - rocks, bogwood, everything.

I've read elsewhere, mostly in old books, that plecs will fight to the death over territory - I'm not sure whether this is true or not,or whether this just applies to plecs of the same type?

What I really want is to keep my lazy old plec and to have another fish, hopefully another plec that doesn't grow so big, that he'll most likely get along with that will take over the algae-eating duties.

What do you recommend?

Maybe you could just put other fish, maybe a flagtail or chinese hi fin... Plecs when they go older tends to quit algae eating job.

I'm looking for something that is easily available, relatively cheap, and that eats algae.

Chinese hi fin algae eater, they're always on the market. Cheap and loves algae, unlike plecos their food primarily consist of algae... May I ask what is the size of your tank, they somehow needs more space than plecos you see.

Chinese hi fin algae eater - do you mean 'Myxocyprinus asiaticus'?

They appear to be an endangered species, and banned from sale in the UK.

I used to have one years ago. Cool little fish. I didn't know its requirements and it died before it got massive (they do get very big). I believe that yes they are banned these days. But if you want a good algae eater see if you can find a flagtail.

Define relatively cheap lol

maybe a royal plec?

For relatively cheap think like twenty quid or less,so I probably couldn't afford a royal plec and wouldn't my common plec fight with one anyway?
I have to admit that I'd not heard of a flagtail, would it cope with big cichlids - midas, texas, jaguar, oscars etc?
