100 gal sump finished

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
100 gal acrylic sump I made.
Old tanks stock currently in the refugium chamber as I had to get the old tank out before I could start on the new setup.

Running approximately 2300 gph through it.

Great design, construction, and fish! It doesnt look like youre using socks but instead some kind of proprietary pre filter over there on the right??? What you got goin on there? What return pumps did you go with?

i am using 3 filter socks for mechanical filtration. one is a nylon sock 150 micron ( less likely to clog) other 2 are felt and very fine. they will likely clog after 3 or 4 days. the nylon sock will give me the extra couple of days to do weekly maintence. i have about 15lbs in ceramic media mostly substrat pro and some fluval bio rings. then another 8lbs or so in those bio blocks ( 40 total at 6" long) when its all said and done ill have plants in the refugium for added filtration.

i am running 2 jerepet DC eco pumps. one is 600 gph and the other is 1850 gph. when the tank is done ill probably see 2000 gph but right now they arent seeing any head height pumping so they are putting in some serious work. almost maxing out he flow all 3 socks can take when clean LOL

Don't mind my messy shop. But here's a better pic of the sock layout and the machined baffle incase it clogs.

Nice. My 100g sump has only two socks but i plan to split them into 4 someday soon since my socks change weekly. I tried to experiment with a mesh nylon sock "insert" in my felt socks but it didnt seem to help the cligging and was just more hassle changing them out more often.

Curious about those pumps...are those ratings at 0' head? I run two jebao dcp-10000s which are rated around 3100gph at 0' head. With the pumps each running 60% power through 1" returns and fairly simple plumbing and ~48" head, my rough calculations are about 2000gph flowing through the sump.

I could be wrong and just misunderstanding but i think you'll want some more power on your returns if youre shooting for anything near 2300gph. In the few years ive been running dc pumps ive noticed they perform much more efficiently, quietly, and with less waste heat when dialed back to 50-75%.

There isnt any formal ratings. just max (14ft) for the models i have. however many reviews are saying they do more then they are rated for. on my 150 i was running the 600 gph model and it did probably 30% more then my old mag drive thats rated at 600gph. i added the 1850gph model now. that being said im being conservative and aiming for 1800-2000 gph when its all setup. should be perfect for a 5x turn over on a 400 gal system.

Just need to line the stand with plywood and make some doors. Then the tank build starts. Looking like 2 weeks or so and everything will be ready to go :)
